Apple has officially announced preparations for the iPhone Duo launch on October 23, with new displays and a large number of demo units in its stores. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, supply will be limited.

Apple plans to set aside a section of its Fifth Avenue flagship store for the phone, and most locations will add an extra spotlight table using Apple's white display tables. A new fixture will show how the phone folds and unfolds.

The Fifth Avenue store is expected to receive more than 150 demo units, while the Apple Park Visitor Center will get nearly 100. Non-flagship stores will receive approximately 20 units each on average, while Chicago's Michigan Avenue, The Grove in Los Angeles, and Manhattan's Upper West Side are each expected to have approximately 30 to 40 devices.

Visitors can explore StandBy on untethered phones in the Avenue display areas. Apple also designed a MagSafe stand that accommodates an open iPhone Duo and two conventional iPhones for store table comparisons. About two months ago, Apple believed production constraints could prevent sales until later in November, but it has since assembled sufficient inventory.

Stores are being equipped with 'Presto' machines adapted for the iPhone Duo to install software updates without opening packaging and add the buyer's name to the first-startup greeting. Pre-orders open October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, with sales starting October 23. The 256GB model starts at $1,999 in the United States.
