Apple says iPhone Duo is supply constrained, no date for balance

The iPhone Duo went on sale in October, after Apple's July-September quarter ended, so its sales were not included in the reported quarter. Apple Store shipping estimates for orders placed today point to late January, unchanged since the first pre-orders sold out on October 16.

Ternus said a very small percentage of iPhone Duo units have been returned with display issues, and Apple is replacing those units with new models. Apple previously confirmed an issue affecting the inner display of some units and directed affected customers to contact AppleCare. Retail staff were reportedly told to warn customers against walk-in purchases on launch day, Friday October 23, due to a likely lack of stock. Some owners reported screens cracking along the hinge, with one Australian owner saying the device cracked after being opened fewer than 20 times.

Mark Gurman reported that Apple initially aimed to release the iPhone Duo in November. Apple reported a September quarter revenue record of $114.5 billion, up 12 percent year over year.
