What is Gorilla Glass and screen protection?

Gorilla Glass is a specially made glass treated chemically to be more scratch- and break-resistant than ordinary glass. It is used on most modern smartphones as the outer layer over the display, and it comes in different generations, older and newer, but the idea is the same: a stronger screen for everyday use. Screen protection is a broader term that includes the glass itself, oil- and fingerprint-resistant coatings, and stick-on screen covers such as tempered glass protectors.

In daily use, Gorilla Glass lowers the chance of scratches when the phone shares a pocket with keys or coins, and it survives minor drops better. However, it is not unbreakable; a fall from a big height or onto a sharp corner can still damage the screen. The fingerprint-resistant coating also helps keep the display clear, but it can wear down over time and needs gentle cleaning.

When buying, look for the type of protective glass mentioned in the phone specs, as it indicates the level of protection but is not an absolute guarantee. If you want extra protection, you can use a tempered glass screen protector or a film, keeping in mind that it may slightly affect touch sensitivity or image clarity. Also, the screen refresh rate, such as 60 Hz, 90 Hz, or 120 Hz, is about how smooth the display looks and has nothing to do with glass strength, but it is an important spec when comparing phones.
