What are Bluetooth versions?

Bluetooth versions are successive updates to the short-range wireless technology, and each newer version generally offers higher speed, lower battery use, and longer range.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that connects a phone to earbuds, smartwatches, car audio, and other nearby devices without a cable. Its versions are numbered, such as 4.0, 5.0, 5.2, and 5.3, and a higher number usually means better speed, range, and power efficiency.

In daily use, a newer version keeps the connection to your earbuds more stable and reduces audio dropouts when you move the phone around, while also using less battery in earbuds and watches. It also helps with connecting to more than one device at a time and can improve call audio quality.

When buying, most regular users are fine with version 5.0 or newer, which is common in modern phones and earbuds. If you use several wireless audio devices or smart home gadgets, look for 5.2 or 5.3 for better multi-device support and power saving, and make sure both devices support the same version to get the benefits.
