What is IP68 / IP69 water resistance?
IP68 and IP69 ratings show how well a phone resists water and dust, but they do not mean the device is indestructible.
IP is an international standard with two digits: the first for dust and the second for water. In IP68, the 6 means complete dust protection, and the 8 means resistance to immersion in fresh water up to a certain depth (often 1.5 meters for 30 minutes). IP69 adds resistance to high-pressure hot water jets, which is useful in tough work environments.
In daily use, IP68 gives you more peace of mind with rain, accidental splashes, or quick rinses. However, it does not protect against salt water, soap, or hot drinks, and resistance can weaken over time or after a drop. IP69 is not common on regular phones and is usually found on business or rugged devices.
When buying, look for the rating clearly listed in the specs, noting that most flagship phones come with IP68, while IP69 is rare. Remember that water resistance is not permanent and is usually not covered by warranty, so avoid exposing the phone to water more than necessary.
