Android and iOS update years refer to how many years a phone receives new system versions and security patches. The length varies by brand and price tier: some budget phones get two years, while some flagship models get five or seven years.
In daily use, updates bring new features and improvements to performance and battery life, and most importantly they close security holes that protect your data and banking apps. A phone that stops receiving updates becomes less secure and may eventually struggle with newer apps.
When buying, look at the announced number of update years, not just the current system version. Also ask about security support length, because some brands provide security patches longer than major OS updates. In general, three years of OS updates and four years of security updates is good; more is better.
