What is Wireless Charging and Qi2?

Wireless charging lets you charge your phone without a cable, and Qi2 is a newer standard that makes it faster and safer.

Wireless charging is a technology that lets you charge your phone by placing it on a charging pad without plugging in a cable. These pads use magnetic induction, where a coil in the pad transfers energy to a coil inside the phone. The Qi standard is the most common worldwide, and the WPC has developed Qi2, which adds magnets to ensure precise alignment between the phone and the pad.

In daily use, wireless charging means you just set your phone down to charge, reducing wear on the charging port and making it convenient for a desk, car, or nightstand. With Qi2, alignment is easier thanks to magnets, and charging speeds can reach 15W or more on some devices, compared to 5W or 7.5W on older versions. However, wireless charging is generally slower than fast wired charging and may generate extra heat.

When buying, look for a phone that supports Qi2 if you want the best wireless experience. Check the charger's power: standard wireless charging ranges from 5W to 7.5W, while Qi2 goes up to 15W. Make sure the pad is compatible with Qi2 or Qi, and preferably from a reliable brand to avoid overheating. Also, having magnets in the phone or a compatible case improves stability and speed.
